Chapter Seven

Gareth drove to the doctor’s office, ready to tear Conrad apart and then put him back together so he could do it again. The more he thought about it, the more he became convinced Conrad was the source of his problems. Morgana climbed the stairs to speak to him as one person and came down as another.

He almost wished he’d used his mage’s power to read her mind. But none of his family would do so with a person dear to them. And he was just beginning to realize in his soul how precious Morgana was.

Blessed Merlin but he wanted to fold her in his arms and promise he’d take care of any and all of her problems for the rest of her life.

He grinned at the thought. Morgana would probably bat him away like a pesky fly. He had yet to earn the privilege of cherishing her. Merlin but he did love this woman.

He drove too fast to the office of the coroner only to be told Dr. Conrad was away on official business for two weeks. He nearly disgraced himself by seizing the poor clerk’s shirt and shaking him like a dog does a shoe. Luckily he caught himself in time and merely gave a curt nod. Doubtless leaving the hapless clerk wondering what he’d done to incur the displeasure of such a prestigious visitor.

Gareth was sure Conrad was the clue. What could he have said? He could ask Morgana but she’d probably not answer. Again he fleetingly considered invading her mind. Even more tempting as matters grew muddier but this he still refused to do.

Still, nothing said he couldn’t visit Morgana, even though she might try to evade him, and see if he could pick up another clue.

There was no use dodging the truth. She was absolutely miserable. Morgana tried every device she knew. Gardening worked the best. She could almost lose herself in the demanding work of transplanting and nurturing the herb garden she’d started. Studying the various properties of the different herbs was constantly fascinating and she found herself always on the search for the plants she couldn’t buy locally. She kept up a voluminous correspondence with other herb enthusiasts with an exchange program benefiting all parties.

She considered trying to write more on her novel but the basic idea suddenly seemed silly to her. She didn’t want to write any more nonsense about thwarted lovers. Nor did she think this was what people liked to read. She tore up every page she’d written. She’d darn well better come up with a better plot, although in her frame of mind she didn’t feel able to write a successful romance.

Everything turned out beautifully in novels.

Thinking of Gareth, as she did every waking hour, she decided she wanted to share some of the interests that made him the special man he was. Rocks. Of course. He loved his rocks. She researched every source she could find and eventually ordered some books from London about minerals.
